Dear employer,

Let your developers learn from the experiences of their peers and a professional coach. Give them a sneak peek into the kitchen of others.

As a company owner, I see that full-day courses are generally boring and expensive. WeCamp is an incredible opportunity for my developers to learn in a fun-filled way at a very affordable price.

Ramon de la Fuente, CEO at Future500

5-day
Coding
Retreat

WeCamp 2015 is 5-day coding retreat on a private island. Your developer will be teamed up with 4 others and a personal coach to create fantastic software. In five days time, they will go from a new software concept to the working product and experience all stages of the process.

I've learned to better recognise what I find important in a team and how I can effectively communicate with different kinds of people.

Pascal de Vink, Lead developer at AutoTrack.nl

First of all, the team comes up with an idea. The next step is to specify who the product is for and what it should be doing to produce the most value to the end-user. We believe that developers can get a lot out of this part of the event. Who are we targeting? What do we want them to achieve using our product? And how will our target group incorporate our product into their existing routines?

After that, it's implementation time. Will the team work iteratively or cascading? What measures do they take to make sure their released software works as advertised? What's their best way of working together and keep everyone focused? What kind of communication does an immersive project like this require? All these choices are theirs to make. Again, with the continuous help of their personal coach!

On the very last day of WeCamp, all teams will present their working product to their peers.

As an architect helping all kinds of teams, I see a lot of skilled people staying indoors, never meeting developers from other companies and with other skillsets and experiences. There's so much to learn!

Mike van Riel, architect at Ingewikkeld and coach at WeCamp 2014

Personal Coaching

During the week on the island, the coaches will help your developer create a personal development plan, to ensure a continuing value for their attendance on the island. Additionally, about a month after WeCamp finished, there will be an online session for your developer with their coach to review how WeCamp affected their work.

On Saturday, every attendee leaves with a certificate of attendance.

Not only will they use tools they haven’t used before, but they will also learn new methods they’ve never used before. It forces them out of their comfort zone.

Frank van den Brink, Founder of Pragmatist and coach at WeCamp 2014

Help your developers
reach the
next level

In five days time, we offer your developer a unique rollercoaster of experiences in understanding and creating business value, technical and social skills, teamwork, and project management.

WeCamp invites all developers to join and learn. In a very small setting of only 25 attendees, your developer will have plenty of time to meet with new people and see which experiences worked for them and which didn't.

And after a week of WeCamp, all this experience will be coming back with them!

Our Island

Yes, you read that right. WeCamp has its own island. In the beautiful Veluwemeer (Veluwelake), just off the coast of Harderwijk and Biddinghuizen lies island De Kluut. De Kluut is a beautiful little private island that will give you inspiration and will set the stage for our projects.

The campsite on this island consists of a range of (tipi-style) tents which include real beds (this style of camping is called glamping). There is a big lounge tent which will allow you to chill out and sit around a campfire. In another tent we'll have the food area.

The island is equipped with a block of 4 private shower/toilet cabins. We have a limited availability of electricity (power is generated by solar panels with a generator as backup), but last year we had no big power issues. You need to assume though that electricity may be gone at any time (don't bring your desktop computer).

About WeCamp

WeCamp is an event focusing on not just hearing about cool technology, but also applying it. During the 5 days of the event, you'll get to work on a project together with 4 random other people, under the guidance of an experienced coach. Together with your team mates, you'll work on improving both your technical skills while developing on the project as well as your soft-skills in managing the project and communicating with your team members.

We also want to focus on the fact that life is not just about work and technology. During the day, you'll be able to take a nice boat trip on a sailing boat or go on the water in a canoe. We are also working on several activities for the evenings that will allow you to relax and enjoy the nice surroundings on our private island.

During the night we'll be camping, but not just regular camping. You'll be appointed a bed (a real bed!) in one of the several tents around the island. You will share this luxurious tent with other attendees of WeCamp. We also have private shower and toilet facilities.

Of course, WeCamp is also about actually learning something. During the week on the island, the coaches will help you create a personal development plan, to ensure a continuing value for your attendance on the island. If you want, you can also attend an online session with your coach, about a month after WeCamp, to see how WeCamp affected your work. You will get a copy of this report, which you may pass on to your boss to show how WeCamp has helped you. On Saturday, you'll also leave with a certificate of attendance.

Ingewikkeld

Ingewikkeld is not just a partner, Ingewikkeld is organizing this event. After a successful WeCamp in 2014 we decided we were crazy enough to do it again. WeCamp fits in perfectly with our aim to help raise the average level of PHP developers around the world. And we learned last year that not just the attendees, but also the coaches and the crew learn a lot during WeCamp.

Enrise

Being the first partner to join us for WeCamp 2015, Enrise has always been a marvellous company to work with. Apart from bringing back their very own BBQ party to WeCamp, we know we can rely on their trust. They, once again, help make us build the most awesome event we can. Thanks, Enrise!

Persgroep Online Services

With titles such as Tweakers, Autotrack and Carsom, Persgroep Online Services do awesome stuff with technology. Last year we had people from Persgroep attending WeCamp, this year they decided to support us! Our game night and main tent are now supported by these awesome people!

Pragmatist

After last year's awesome survival game supported by Pragmatist we are very happy to have them on board again for this year. We've got a brand new survival game for you, and you've got Pragmatist to thank for that. With Frank being one of last year's coaches, he knows enough about WeCamp to make it special. WeCamp 2015 will certainly be legendary with the new survival game.

Tweeweginternet

Just like last year, Tweeweginternet will be delivering us with a high-quality sattelite Internet connection and wifi coverage for the island. And just like last year, their excited response has been to give us a good discount on their services. We love them for it! If you ever need an Internet connection in a remote location, they should be the once you contact!

Future500

Future500 has been a pretty steady group of people to meet at usergroup meetups around The Netherlands, and many a conference you run into them as well. We're very happy to welcome Future500 as one of the partners of WeCamp as well. Their support of the PHP community as a whole and WeCamp more specifically is awesome.

Magma Digital

There's companies that support you, and companies that go beyond just supporting. Magma Digital is one of the companies that has been supportive from the start, and we're very grateful for that. Hailing from the UK, their involvement with the global PHP community is fantastic, and having Magma's Jeremy Coates over for WeCamp is surely part of that involvement. Thanks Magma!

Dutch Web Alliance

Dutch Web Alliance is an alliance between web-related enterpreneurs. The focus of all of these people is quality: They want stuff done right. Next to that, they focus a lot of knowledge sharing. As such, we think DWA is a great partner to have for WeCamp, and two of our coaches are actually a member of the alliance! DWA is sponsoring one of our lunches.

Grobbel & Dreis

Grobbel & Dreis is the company of our coach Petra. She's been in the business of developing sites and applications for a very long time, and has encountered many problems along the way. She's learned a lot and now we'll learn thanks to her. Not just because of her coaching, but she also supports the event by becoming a partner. Grobbel & Dreis is bringing you breakfast on one of the days.

PsyBizz

We're grateful for the support of PsyBizz. With only a few days to go until WeCamp 2015 PsyBizz' Merlijn Tishauser decided to chip in and support WeCamp 2015. This is awesome because it shows how ready they are to support regardless of what they get back. In the spirit of WeCamp where people can both give and take, this is exactly what we are looking for.

Coaches

Ramon De La Fuente

What skills would one look for in a coach? Development experience? Check. Project experience? Check. Able to communicate? Check.

We've known Ramon for what seems like ages already, and last year he attended WeCamp. Ramon is known as a skilled developer as well as a good businessman, with an eye for not just the code but also the people. We are happy and proud to have Ramon on board as a coach for WeCamp 2015.

Petra Dreiskämper

Whether it is PHP, HTML or Javascript, Petra can handle it. The customer can be easy-going or hard to communicate with, Petra can do it.

Petra is a problem solver, where "problem" is used in the widest sense of the word. She is equally skilled in solving architecture problems as she is in people problems. Combine this with running her own company doing a lot of projects, even at the same time, and you'll be sure to learn a lot from her during WeCamp.

Stefan Koopmanschap

Set Stefan free on your codebase and he'll do what users do: The unexpected. He'll find bugs and fix em. While he runs his own company, and WeCamp.

Stefan has surprised many a developer by doing that which the developer did not envision, exposing bugs by thinking out of the box. He is also one of the founders of Ingewikkeld and WeCamp. Last year he knew the hammock well, this year he'll be in action: One of the teams will have Stefan coach them.

Eli White

How about running the premier PHP magazine in the world, and combining that with organizing multiple conferences a year. Crazy? Or Eli?

Eli is our Coach That Comes From Far. Hailing from the USA, he will fly over to help a team bring out their inner talent. He is able to effectively employ an epic amount of organisational skills. Anything from running a magazine to organising a conference, including finding talented authors and speakers.

Richard Tuin

Look at that code. It's a challen... no, it's actually just a problem. Luckily, Richard is here. He can explain it to you, and you'll understand.

Anyone who has worked with Richard on a project will recognize it when we say he knows how to explain and bring structure. Whether he is working on the usergroup he's involved in or working for Enrise, whether you're a co-worker, external developer or customer: You always learn from Richard.

Coach of coaches

Jeremy Coates

Sometimes you need to step back and see the bigger view. While our coaches are busy, having someone that keeps that bigger view is useful.

Last year Jeremy was a coach, and given his background in both tech and psychology, we decided to invite him back as a coach of coaches. Someone that can assist this years coaches in their work, make connections and ensure that both coaches and attendees maximize their teaching and learning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes we get questions. We can answer questions. But when we get questions more than once, we'd rather answer them directly. We'll do that here. If you have a question that is not listed here, contact us: [email protected]

What is included in the price?
The prices includes travel from the Biddinghuizen port to the island (and back on Saturday), food for 5 days, drinks for 5 days, a bed in one of the tents and access to the event including all social events.
Why did the prices go up :-(?
For the first edition in 2014, we thought our prices were reasonable. Turned out they didn't quite cover the costs. We still think the new prices are kind of awesome, compared to any kind of seminar, workshop or other learning experience you can find!
Such a great holiday idea!
That is not a question! Also, WeCamp is not a holiday. We aim for every attendee to learn from this event. A lot. Not just about technology, but also about planning, social skills, presentation, marketing. Everything!
I am not a PHP developer, can I come?
Sure! Although we focus mainly on PHP, if you are a designer, frontender or other developer, you could still learn a lot. About PHP, but also about soft skills, planning, marketing, presentation, teamwork etc. It is up to you to decide whether this will be useful to you, but we really think it could be useful.
Should I bring my own tent/sleeping bag/pillow?
No! The island has tents, beds (yes, real beds) and everything provided for you. Do bring your own laptop, clothes, toothbrush though.
I have a special diet, what is possible?
Drop us an e-mail at [email protected] We can't promise anything, but we'll try to cater to special needs as much as we possibly can.
How is the tent assignment done?
Tent assignment is done nearly randomly. We will have seperate female and male tents, but aside from that, you may be put into a tent with a random set of attendees.
What do I do in case of problems?
Always contact the staff! All staff will be clearly identified at the start of the event and there will always be at least one member of staff available immediately.
